L’Oreal Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum Review

For many women, having thick, long, and full lashes is a sign of beauty, youth and vitality. That’s why cosmetic companies like L’Oreal are constantly releasing new products designed to boost the appearance of lashes, promote lash growth and decrease clumping.

One of L’Oreal’s newest lash-enhancing products is its Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum, which is designed to make lashes “visibly fuller” and “thicker,” according to the L’Oreal website.

To find out if this product is truly effective at enhancing the appearance of lashes, I researched its primary and secondary ingredients and customer reviews from around the Web.

What’s Inside?

L’Oreal’s Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum contains centella asiatica extract and arginine, which the manufacturer claims are used to “reinforce, protect and condition each lash.”

In addition, the product also contains a large number of chemicals commonly found in similar cosmetic products including sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and glycerin.

How Is It Used?

L’Oreal recommends people use the product by applying it daily underneath mascara and overnight on bare lashes. The directions say to glide the rounded applicator across the lashes like eyeliner and use the curved brush to spread the serum on each lash.

What Are People Saying About It?

The product currently has a 4 out of 5 star rating on L’Oreal’s website. One customer said it makes her “lashes look longer” and her “eyelashes curled longer.”

Another said she has only been using it for 5 days and she can “already see a difference” in her lashes. Yet another customer gave the product 5 stars and said she “noticed it working almost immediately.”

Main Ingredients

As mentioned above, L’Oreal Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum contains 2 primary ingredients: centella asiatica extract and arginine.

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica Extract, also known as gotu kola, is a small plant native to the continent of Asia. The National Institutes of Health states it is used for a wide variety of medicinal purposes, including the treatment of skin conditions such as leprosy, lupus, varicose ulcers, eczema, psoriasis and more. In addition, it is also used to promote wound healing, reduce inflammation and produce a sedative/antidepressant effect in many individuals. [1]

However, WebMD’s review of the extract says it is only possibly effective at decreasing the return of blood from the feet and legs back to the heart. The website states there is insufficient evidence to determine if it is effective at treating any other conditions. [2]

Based on my research, it doesn’t appear centella asiatica produces a pronounced cosmetic effect on the skin, hair or nails.

Wikipedia describes arginine as an amino acid and one of the 20 most common and natural amino acids in the natural world. The website states arginine is used for therapeutic purposes, including reducing anxiety, treating erectile dysfunction and lowering blood pressure. [3]

WebMD shows arginine is possibly effective for a wide variety of conditions, including improving recovery after surgery, easing chest pain associated with coronary artery disease, reducing bladder inflammation and improving kidney functions in patients taking cyclosporine. [4]

Like centella asiatica, there is no significant evidence of arginine’s effectiveness when used cosmetically, including making hair or lashes appear thicker or fuller.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is a sodium salt used in many cosmetic products, including L’Oreal Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum. It is used because of its ability to penetrate skin and add volume to hair and lashes.

n addition, it is not irritating to most skin types and is well tolerated by most people, according to the Cosmetics Database. [5]

According to Wikipedia, panthenol is an alcohol analog of pantothenic acid. Like sodium hyaluronate, it’s commonly used in many cosmetic products due to its moisturizing properties as well as its tendency to bind to hair shafts.

This causes it to coat and protect hair, giving it a shinier and thicker appearance. It’s also effective at penetrating skin and locking in moisture for long periods of time. [6]

Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a sugar alcohol compound. It’s a common ingredient in cosmetic and hygiene products due to its lubricant properties and its smoothing properties. [7]

After researching the main ingredients in L’Oreal Concentrate Lash Boosting Serum, it appears there is no solid evidence to support either centella asiatica or arginine improving the appearance, fullness, or growth of lashes.

Although both of these ingredients are known to have beneficial properties, they are generally used internally to treat chronic health conditions rather than provide cosmetic benefit for hair and lashes.

However, the other ingredients in the product, including sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, glycerin and a whole host of other chemicals common in the serum, are known to produce the moisturizing, protecting and thickening effects promised by L’Oreal.

The number of positive reviews online for L’Oreal Concentrated Lash Boosting Serum leads me to believe the product is indeed effective at improving the health and appearance of lashes, but it is likely due to the standard ingredients rather than the product’s advertised ingredients of centella asiatica and arginine.

People who want to improve the appearance of their lashes should give this product a try, but should also note its more exotic active ingredients may not justify a potentially higher price tag.
